Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT), established in 1956 as Chengdu College of Geological Exploration, is one of China’s first “world-class universities with first-class disciplines.” After several renamings, it became CDUT in 2001. Originally administered by the Ministry of Geology and related ministries, CDUT is now jointly run by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. It was listed in China's “world-class universities with first-class disciplines” in 2019 and again in 2022.


Over the past 60+ years, CDUT has trained nearly 300,000 talents, contributing significantly to China's development. Notable alumni include five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering. CDUT’s motto, “Seeking Truth, Seeking Triumph,” reflects its enduring tradition of perseverance and innovation.


The university spans two campuses in Chengdu and Yibin, covering 3,487 mu (about 232 hectares). It offers a conducive learning environment for 38,373 students, including 30,161 undergraduates and 8,065 postgraduates. CDUT comprises 20 schools, three research institutes, and one independent college. It is recognized for excellence in graduate employment and innovation.


CDUT’s academic focus lies in geology, petroleum, nuclear technology, and environmental studies, complemented by strong engineering and interdisciplinary programs in management, law, and arts. It offers doctoral degrees in seven primary disciplines, master's degrees in 26, and has six postdoctoral research stations. Its Geological Resources and Geological Engineering program is a national first-class discipline, and four disciplines rank in the global top 1% by ESI.


The university offers 66 undergraduate majors, including 23 national first-class and eight national characteristic majors. It has won five national teaching achievement awards and boasts numerous national-level educational facilities, such as demonstration centers and off-campus practice bases. CDUT actively promotes innovation through programs like the “Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program.”


CDUT’s faculty includes 2,893 members, with 465 professors and numerous award-winning scholars. It employs flexible mechanisms to attract academicians and experts, forming high-level teaching and research teams. The university also hosts four academician teams and various innovation and research groups, contributing to its reputation as a hub of academic excellence.


In research, CDUT excels with two state key laboratories and 34 platforms supported by national ministries and Sichuan Province. It leads major projects like Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) and international collaborations, earning over 1,000 awards, including national science and technology prizes. CDUT plays a key role in projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion and Sichuan-Tibet Railway, showcasing its commitment to national development.


The Chengdu Natural History Museum, jointly established by CDUT and Chengdu Municipality, houses over 60,000 specimens, including the renowned Hechuan Mamenchisaurus fossil. CDUT’s library contains extensive digital and physical resources, and the university publishes six academic journals, including international collaborations.


CDUT values global partnerships, maintaining ties with over 180 institutions worldwide. It hosts the Chengdu University of Technology Oxford Brookes College, the first Sino-foreign cooperative education institution in Sichuan. The university supports initiatives like the Newton Foundation’s China-UK cooperation projects.
